The Douglas Fire (#336), on the northern end of the Dalton Highway Complex, was active yesterday on the north and west flanks of the fire. The Black Hills Wildfire Use Module used chainsaws to continue thinning black spruce around Pump House #5. The east and west flanks of the Prospect Fire (#949) were active yesterday as the fire backed towards Prospect Creek. Light fire activity was observed on the MM 125 Fire (#441). No activity was observed on the Curky Fire (#318). The south end of the complex consist of the Troublesome Fire (#359) and the Huron Fire (#372), both of which showed minimal fire activity yesterday. Firefighters worked yesterday to improve fire mitigation lines previously installed in the community of Rampart. They will continue work today to assess values that may need protective efforts in the future.
Dalton Highway Complex Fires (83,565 acres – The total acreage increased by over 7,000 acres from yesterday. This increase is due to more accurate mapping on the Huron and Troublesome Fires. Note that the total acreage includes previously reported fires that are part of the total complex numbers.
Fire Weather (Warnings/Watches): A Red Flag Warning for abundant lightning and extremely dry fuels remains in effect for the Interior. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are forecast, brining with them the possibility of lightning and gusty winds. A cold front will move across the Central Interior Tuesday night. Light rain and winds will move through with this front, bringing light rain and cooler conditions through the end of this week. Temperatures today will be 73-83 degrees and relative humidity levels will be 33-48%.
Closures: Arctic Circle Campground remains closed due to area firefighting activity. The Arctic Circle Wayside (sign location) is open.
Public Safety: The Dalton Highway is currently frequented with trucks, travelers, and firefighting equipment. Smoke has been heavy along the highway, driving with your lights on is highly recommended. Stopping along the road is very dangerous, as the shoulders are narrow and drop off steeply.
