The past was on display last year at the Pioneer Log Village in Bad Axe during Huron County Museum Weekend. The fun included a blacksmith demonstration, antique dairy equipment, apple cider and grape pressing and a spinning wheel in action. The museum weekend returns this Saturday and Sunday.

The Huron County Historical Society is presenting its annual Countywide Museum Weekend this upcoming Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

For the last 10 years, the historical society, consisting of volunteers and local residents, has worked to promote and celebrate the local history of Huron County. Each museum has a variety of history, from lighthouses to lumbering and from railroads to farming.

“This is a great way for us to highlight our museums and our rich history here in Huron County,” said Huron County Historical Society President Diane Ellicott.

Museums will be offering history tours, activities, and much more, including food and special exhibits. Many will also have special demonstrations of old farm and lumber equipment. The following museums will be participating in the weekend: 

Pioneer Log Village and Bad Axe Museum of Local History — Lots of old-time activities and blacksmith demonstrations. The buildings will also be open for tours.

Bay Port Area Historical — On Saturday, The Bay Port Fish Company will be in attendance offering their food for people visiting, as well as teaching how to mend fish nets. Children will be able to interact with live animals, make and taste homemade ice cream.

Historical Society of Caseville Museum — The museum will be open both days, offering its Historic Caseville Walking Tour.

Elkton Heritage Center Museum, Log Cabin and Barn — The building will be open both days. On Saturday, the museum is hosting a horseshoe tournament.

Frank Murphy Museum, Harbor Beach — Tours will be available.

Grice House Museum — The venue will be offering tours as well as debuting their new Girl Scout exhibit.

Woelke Research Center, Depot Museum and Berne Junction — Open will be open from noon to 4 p.m. both days.

Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse Museum — The historic tower will be open for attendees to climb.

Port Austin History Center — History from Port Austin, Grindstone City, and Port Crescent will be present at the museum with a 10-acre site and six historic buildings, gardens and woodlands trails. During the weekend, the venue will host a Fiber Arts Show featuring displays and demonstrations of spinning, weaving, knitting, and rag rugs, as well as a number of vendors.

Port Hope Depot Heritage Center and Historic Brinker Lumber Museum — Fire engines, caboose, model railroads, a town model, antique Model-T cars, old farming tools and a hand water pump are a few things that will be present during the event. The museum will also be presenting its new Brinker lumberyard.

Charles W. Liken House Museum, Carriage/Barn and Old Sebewaing Township Hall — The museum will have vintage wedding gowns and veils on display at the Liken House. The Carriage and Barn will display historical machinery including a printing press, stone crusher and more. Old Town Hall will feature many newly acquired items plus the 1918 Sebewaing Fire Dept. first water pump.

Ten Cent Horse Barn Museum — Both Lionel and American Flyer model trains will be on display. The village of Ubly’s famous Alabama Jubilee history and costume, including the cast and crew names will be present during the weekend on Longuski Lane.

“We want to teach kids about the history now so that they’ll be able to tell those stories to their grandparents,” Ellicott said. “They don’t teach the local history in school, so we want to preserve and talk about it. Telling the story today passes it on for the next 100 years.”
