Ren’s Mobil, a local gas station in Amherst that has been around since the 1970s, has reopened its pumps after closing them last month in protest of Mobil’s increasing gas prices.
Ren Gladu, the owner of the gas station who has been running the station for 49 years this month, said that they have reopened without any gas supplier affiliation but that they are using Gulf gas to serve customers.
The gas station is selling gas for $4 regular, $4.35 for special and $4.75 for super, said Gladu, noting that that’s the cheapest gas most people will find in the area.
“Gulf doesn’t tell me where to put the price, that they just suggest what the prices are, and if I want to go along with it, fine, but telling me either put it up or eat it, I’m not going for it,” Gladu told Western Mass News.
According to Jeff Gladu, the station manager and the owner’s son, Mobil turned a record profit last quarter, squeezing him, his father and their customers dry.
“[Mobil is] just being greedy,” Jeff Gladu states. “If thats the way [Mobil is] going to play, we aren’t going to do it anymore.”
At the beginning of May, the station paid $16,480 for 5,000 gallons of gas. A few weeks later, that price increased to $23,484.
After their announcement to not pump gas, Jeff Gladu said that they had been “off the wall crazy” with the community “doing all they can to keep us in business.” In fact, an individual at a local university offered the Gladu’s $100,000 to find another supplier.
Instead of selling gas, Ren’s Mobil decided to continue their repair business and to sell used cars.
Jeff Gladu said that his father “wants to take care of the average consumer” and “was standing up for something that was right.”
